The Marais is a historic neighbourhood with no official status and covers parts of the what are now Paris’ third and fourth arrondissements on the right bank of the Seine. Today, it is largely considered to lie within an area bordered by the rue Beaubourg to the west, the boulevard Beaumarchais to the east, the rue de Bretagne to the north and the river Seine to the south.
The area was formerly a swamp, and was first inhabited in the twelfth century by a number of religious orders, including the Knights Templar. After the building of the place des Vosges in the sixteenth century, the area, which was until that point on the outer extremity of the young city, become the neighbourhood of choice for the city's nobility.
Dozens of private mansions were built around the Marais, and several of them survive today. The city's élite began to leave in the middle of the eighteenth century, preferring the more spacious neighbourhoods of the faubourg Saint-Honoré and the faubourg Saint-Germain.
The final rich inhabitants were driven out after the Revolution, and were replaced by a working-class population of tradesmen and factory works who took over the former mansions and converted many of them into workshops.
When much of Paris was extensively redeveloped in the nineteenth century, the Marais was largely untouched and its narrow, winding streets remain mostly unchanged. In 1969, new Culture Minister André Malraux launched a conservation programme which is still ongoing. Now a conservation area, the Marais is now popular with tourists and a much sought-after address for rich Parisians.
Over the years, it has also become home to a number of different groups: the Jewish community moved in at the end of the 19th century, a large influx of Chinese inhabitants flocked to the area after the First World War and it has been home to the city's gay village since the 1980s. These diverse populations have made the Marais one of the most lively, authentic neighbourhoods in the French capital.
The Marais can be reached on the Paris metro using the stations Saint-Paul, Hôtel de Ville, Rambuteau or Arts et Métiers.

A conservation area
Impressed by the cultural and artistic impact of a neighbourhood festival, Culture Minister André Malraux declared the Marais the city's first conservation area. The neighbourhood includes several museums and historic sights as well as an exceptional range of architecture.
Full of galleries
Since the arrival of the musée Picasso in 1985, the neighbourhood has become home to several art galleries.
A gay village
Since the 1980s, the Marais has become increasingly well known as a gay destination, especially in the area around the rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie, and is now home to gay bars, restaurants, bookshops and other boutiques. The gay community is perfectly integrated into the multicultural life of the Marais where tourists and locals alike flock to enjoy the lifestyle, dine out or enjoy the shopping.
